LJ Hivemind, help me

I'm working on a requested mix--Ebonlock wants a response to her Hellfire a Go Go album--and I'm trying to figure out what I have in my collection that's mod and groovy. But I'm not sure I can distinguish mod and groovy from funky, especially when dealing with modern bands looking back.
I've got some possible ideas, like PortisHead and The Like, but what I'm trying to find on the internets currently is some idea of how to define the sound I'm looking for.
You should feel free to advise me, and consider this your IFIAYAQ! Day entry.

There are a number of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Rob Zombie/White Zombie songs that *I* would call mod and groovy, but that's a far cry from Portishead's version of mod and groovy. I tend to lump Portishead (along with Thievery Corporation, Morcheeba, Hooverphonic, Esthero, and Daughter Darling) into the "trip-hop" category. Sadly, I seem to have deleted my trip-hop Pandora station, or I'd give you that link.

TKK, specifically Sexplosion, is on the list. And I definitely call Portishead trip-hop, but they have those loungey elements that make me think early sixties.
I'm also considering some of Garbage's less abrasive stuff, like Queer, TMBG's Yeh Yeh, Twiggy Twiggy, and Depeche Mode's cover of Route 66. Fitz and the Tantrums might work as well, but they're more of a Stax/Motown sound.

Ooo. I had Bitter:Sweet but did not think about that.

That's a tough borderline in spots, especially for people like Fitz and the Tantrums. How's this for a litmus test: can you picture Austin Powers dancing to it?

That's flipping brilliant!

P.S. - Look for a song called Jim the Jinn by De Phazz. I think it fits the bill.

More generally and less specific to this project, you might look into the entire soundtrack to The Truth About Charlie--a mediocre remake of Charade that had an awesome soundtrack (on which that song appears).

So noted. I remember seeing trailers for that and thinking "Wow. I have no interest in seeing or scorning that film." But The Matrix has proved that a soundtrack can be of more worth than the film. (:
