And finger popping daddies
This week on Audiography is 'Top 5 OTM'. Which is to me way more interesting than just 'Top 5'.
So crossposting it here.
So my top ATM songs usually relate to either whatever mix CD I'm working on or whatever new batch of CDs I've picked up at the library. All of these are off my super secret current assignment, but many of them are on long term 'ATM' rotation.
Sick of Myself by Matthew Sweet on 100% Fun.
Matthew Sweet is one of my long term favorite guitar-pop-that's-not-really-poppy artists. In fact, I may have posted this track to this channel in the past. This is classic 'shout along in the car' music. I love the bassline, and that alone is enough to make me happy and listen to the track three or four times in a row.
Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on Let Love In.
If you haven't heard this song, you probably don't get out much. Nick Cave isn't your traditional Goth Rock'r and yet his rock music overflows with the gothic. When it's time for me to run an RPG scene with an evil archnemesis with a master plan, I listen to this song on repeat. It's sinster and it's arrogant and it's cynical and dark.
Time to Start by Blue Man Group on The Complex.
I had no idea, until the first GAMT, that Blue Man Group made music. I thought they were just a bunch of guys in body paint that did weird arty stuff ala Mumenschanz in Las Vegas. I got a copy of their 'White Rabbit' from HamGallon and went out and got the album (Do you hear that, RIAA?). It's kind of like Kraftwerk meets that guy from marketing who's got the 18-34 target tied up. Plus it made me laugh, repeatedly.
(What's So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello and the Attractions on Armed Forces.
This one runs constant parallel with (The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes on 'My Aim is True'. I love Elvis. He's witty and dry and he writes amazing hooks. I just got a copy of 'Delivery Man' which tries way too hard to be alt.country and I totally blame his wife for it but it's the first disappointment I've had. Again, if you haven't heard this one you probably don't get out much. One of my favorite childhood television moments involves watching Tracy Ullman sing this song.
Wild Birds Flock to Me by Peter Murphy on Cascade.
Peter Murphy used to be in Bauhaus. A friend of mine described the split as 'Peter Murphy and Daniel Ash discover that there's not enough room onstage for both them and their egos'. I love Tones on Tail, I love Love & Rockets. But Peter Murphy's voice makes me all swoony. Cascade is an amazing album, and this along with "I'll Fall with Your Knife" are my favorite songs from it. It's dark and moody and it says I'm Different And That Means Better. At least, that's what it says to me. The little voices.
Bonus
SemiCharmed Life by the Tufts Men's Choir Beelzebub on 1998's Jade.
I love a capella, especially stuff that moves away from the traditional 'Duke of Earl' stuff. I love covers that are different. And I really liked this song until it got the living crap played out of it on the radio. And so now I have a version I'm not sick of. And I like to sing along with them.
Bonus Bonus
Nile Delta Disco (Blue Gedida Mix) by Transglobal Underground on Backpacking on the Graves of Our Ancestors.
TGU are a worldbeat highly danceable bunch who often work with middle eastern superstars like Natacha Atlas. I wasn't going to include this song but the playlist was running while I composed this LJ entry and this song came on and I said HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS SONG and started dancing in my chair and Aegyptian Pharaohs fell from the sky and played the blues and so I had to include it. 'Backpacking' is a sort of greatest hits remixed album, and that's a good thing.
