Coyote Cinema: Gravity
Damn. Alfonso Cuaron. Damn.
At the end, as the credits rolled, my heart was racing and there were tears in my eyes. Yes, this movie could have used a science advisor, preferably somebody with experience in rotational and accelerational physics. Or Ron Howard and Tom Hanks. If you're Neil DeGrasse Tyson you may want to pass on this film, but I still think the science is better than in most Hollywood films. And this was still a beautiful film. Again, Cuaron. And two actors who will tell you a story. Clooney and Bullock essentially carry the film (brief support from Shariff and Ed Harris). And there's a lot of this film that's NASA cheerleading--space is awesome, space is majestic and powerful--which is sort of at odds with the idea that pretty much every single thing man put into space has burned up or crashed by film's end. And you have a female lead who comes into power and is given agency and is resourceful. I was a little worried at the end that she was going to get saved by The Guy, but it was all her. The 3D was very nice, as was the.. whatever version of the sound system, and if you like iMax then that's probably good. Sooner or later I will learn that, for me, iMax means 'we turned up the volume and put it on a bigger screen so you have to sit back further. So it's pretty much like a normal cinema but louder'.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson's Thoughts
Re: Neil DeGrasse Tyson's Thoughts
Also, I remember thinking "Really, guys? The Russians have floating chess pieces and the Chinese have floating ping pong paddles?"
But we both enjoyed it.
