Yeah, sorry, wrong number.

This morning at 2am (just about the time I'd finally settled in for bed) I got a phone call which, as soon as I picked up, disconnected.
I was a little concerned, since anybody who calls me at two in the morning is probably in need. And it wasn't a number I recognized. So I reverse dialed, and the person on the other end quickly picked up.
I said "I just received a call from this number--"
"No you didn't. Because nobody's been using this phone." The response was quick and firm, and would brook no disagreement.
Um. Whatever. "Okay thanks. *click*"

Does anybody recognize this number? 408 842 4512

I googled a bit out of random nosy curiosity and actually found a webpage that claims to do reverse phone lookups (http://www.anywho.com). It didn't recognize that one, though.

At that hour of night, I'd be assuming it was somebody too drunk to dial the right number. It's still an unpleasant thing to happen - I stopped answering nightly phonecalls entirely after getting a genuinely scary call at 3am once. If it's anybody in *real* trouble they can as easily dial the local version of 911 as me, and anything else can wait for the morning...

Yeah, the reverse look ups apparently can't do cel phone numbers, which pretty much covers about half the numbers out here any more.
Who ever answered didn't sound very drunk. But I was suspicious they were aware that their phone had accidentally called me and didn't want to discuss the matter.

There's also the joy that it could be like what happened to me... I got a cellphone, and they programmed it with a number... apparently at the same time as someone else was assigned the same number.
We got it sorted out after answering each others' calls for a week (I finally had the idea that I should just call my own # from the cellphone and see what happened, and got to talk to 'em).
Anyway... the person who dialed the wrong # might not have been the person you reached at all, really... and if it's been happening recently, it would explain the person's instant irritation. :-P

Anyway. I'm just making this up.
