I know, but did you fall down a well as a child and find a coyote-cave or something? I mean, did the animal come to you in some peyote-induced stupor and tell you the secrets of the universe? Is it a furry thing?

Um. It's more about the Coyote Luck.
Coyote is the one, in the teaching stories, who pushes the envelope, who breaks the rules and then finds out why the rules are there. Coyote is very clever. Often he is too clever. Coyote is the one who thinks things are going just great until suddenly he realizes that he's thousands of feet above the arroyo with an anvil in each hand.
But after all is said and done, Coyote is a survivor. He's adapted to man's taking over his environment; he says 'Hey, cats are almost as yummy as rabbits and they move a lot slower'. He turns the city into an urban version of his old habitat--he hangs out in Central Park, he rides the shuttle train to the airport.
When Coyote is your totem, you can usually count on having lots of 'learning experiences'. You generally don't choose him--he chooses you. But at least your misfortune is amusing to others.

If I am part aboriginal American, very little of it shows, and while my tradition is eclectic enough that I've absorbed shamanic elements (and had a fasting visionquest) I'm not under tutelage from a recognized professional. There is nothing official about this relationship. (:

What was the fasting vision quest like? Do you have a journal entry about it?

It was... not what I'd expected. (: Of course, I think I was like nine years old at the time. I'd left the house, because I knew I was supposed to be outside for this and because that way my mother wouldn't make me eat. I'd managed to skip dinner the night before, and so it was only about 36 hours without food. I didn't know at the time that I was hypoglycaemic, and it was a pretty warm day for Oregon, so by nightfall I was pretty disoriented and off kilter. The kicker, I expect, was the lack of water. There was this amazingly attractive young man--big dark eyes, and wavy black hair--and while there was nothing animalistic about him I still knew he was Coyote. Kind of like in dreams when you know something absolutely despite any kind of indication. Anyway. In retrospect, I was kind of disappointed because I wanted a cool totem like Bear or Wolf or Hawk. You know, the standard Boy Totems. (: Anyway. I was in the blackberry thicket, which was unwise since (a) the intoxicating smell of ripe blackberries was not helping me stay focused (b) unsteadiness and poor balance are not good friends with thorns the length of your thumbnail. And so he squatted down and looked at me and said "You're looking a little faded." I didn't see him as anybody special at the time, just somebody who had invaded my thicket (which I couldn't really get out of), and I told him very solemnly that I was on a visionquest. And he smiled, a very white toothy smile, and said "You should eat something, Jefe." And then he ... went away. I didn't see or hear him walk off, or disappear or anything. He just went away. And that was when I recognized him.

So do you think he was actually a vision, or did you see himn with a clarity that you see other people with, making him most likely a person but still a sign nontheless?

I think it pleases him greatly that I was never really able to decide one way or the other. (: Here's your lesson, from a direction you never expected and in a form you never saw coming until after it hit.
I mean, hell, strictly speaking the entire thing could have been a delusion or wishful thinking.
