She's got everything

More iTunes weirdness.
So I found out what the little exclamation mark next to a song means--that iTunes has no idea where this song is, nor how it got into the library. And now it seems to be randomly forgetting songs. When I spot the exclamation mark and re-remember songs for it, it will then forget more. Once, the entire album save the track I just remembered went missing simultaneously. The more common tactic seems to be that it forgets the very next track once it remembers the current track.
I'm not moving these files, I'm not touching or renaming them or anything. Oftentimes I haven't even played the tracks since I ripped them.
I'm hoping that the situation where it takes a full minute to spin up a track, or where it stutters in mid-track is related to the CD-ROM weirdness and as soon as I set the DVD to Master or plug in a new drive that will stop.
Ah, this modern life.

I haven't had that problem, but I have a habit of backing up my new mp3s to CDR or external HD just in case such things start to happen like that. Apple also does the automatic software update thing which seems to stay on top of bugs.

There is a button choice that pops up with one choice being to trash the file and the other to keep it, so I could see where a person might accidently delete the files when removing them from song lists.

Yeah, but the files are still right there. I just have to go back and remind it where the files are, and then it says "Oh yeah! *Those* files!"

Oh yeah. I've had that happen. But not for a long time.

Then I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope it's just a phase that Apple is going through, like a wayward teenager.

I have this happening, too, and it can't find the files. Ever again. Not even when they were there a moment ago.

Z Here. The only time this happens to us is when we launch itunes when the volume where our mp3's live is not present for some reason or another. Is it possible that your collection is off line when you start up itunes? The fix is to restart itunes once you know your files are present. Finicky stuff, this.
Good Luck!

Hey Z. The mp3s are all on a fixed hard drive which really *shouldn't* be going anywhere. And I'll try just restarting, next time it starts forgetting files.
