Meeting you with a view to a kill

So I'd heard it was a retro piece, going back and doing back story and 'how Bond got to be all Bondian'. And when the film started out in b/w I said 'hunh, interesting choice, but perhaps a bit arty for a Bond film.'
And then the screen said "Czech Republic" and I was all Buh?
At first I thought maybe the film was deliberately confusing (or just confused) about when it was set. There were cel phones, but one of them was big and clunky and had a waggly antenna. His swim trunks were sixties fashion straight out of Dr. No. But then they talked about Photoshop and 9/11 and I figured one of two things--it's either a Marvel comics style retcon and James is now forty years younger, or this is the new James Bond in the style of Dread Pirate Roberts.
I'm still not certain which, but it probably doesn't matter in the end. And I'm already quite fond of Vesper, because she's smart and manages to look hot even when she's supposed to be out of make up and in a dressing robe. Plus, despite being 'just an accountant' she still got to be involved in combat.

EDIT:
Oh yeah, the Parkour sequence was wonderful. And the final piece with the sinking Venetian house. Wow.

I was pretty impressed, and I tend to be pretty hard on Bond films... It's a bit of a starting over thing, but with a very strong sense of the history...

Bond was nicely rough, while still managing a taste of dapper, and Vesper was one of the best Girls yet.

Yeah, I'm actually liking the rough. It's got that sort of Firefly-esq 'this violence is real violence' thing going on. I think the Bond films had gotten too fantastical, and a little grit really does the franchise a world of good.

This is the first Bond movie I could completely enjoy, and I've seen them all. (I guess I just kept hoping that maybe the next one would be better, even though there was no good reason to think that.) I really do look forward to the next one, though, if it's stylistically like Casino Royale.

I just saw Casino Royale this weekend. I have to say that I was disappointed in the lack of an exciting car chase and Q. I've come to expect those sorts of things in a Bond film.

I haven't seen a Bond movie in a long time and was excited by this one.

I loved the mix of eras and was confused as you were.

I looooooved the Parkour! Booyaaa! :)
