Update from the Beeb.
Apparently, actually using your brain makes it work better, longer.
The headline specifically mentions linguistics and being fluent in multiple languages, but the text talks about doing crossword puzzles, learning things, reading books...

Back in Psych 101, there was a little blurb in my textbook about an order of nuns whose specific goal was to develop their brains as much as possible during their lifetime by engaging in these sorts of activities (apparently crossword puzzles were a favorite). Then, when they died, they donated their brains to medicine so that people could study the structure of their brain and how it compared with other folk in their age group. I remember thinking that if I ever joined a convent, I wanted it to be one like that. =D
