Nabbed from Will: Tim Russert at the Democratic debate asks "What's your favorite Bible verse?"

"There's been a lot of discussion about the Democrats' and the issue of faith and values."
So the way to approach this is to ensure that the Democrats know that the only faith and values they can pretend to espouse are Christian Faith and Christian Values. And if you can't sum it up in ten seconds then it's not sound bitey enough and you obviously have no values.

it really bothers me that people insist the President be Christian. That's not to imply you have to be Christian to have a favorite Bible verse. Politics are such a country club. grrr.

Oh definitely, there is no strict requirement for the PotUS to be Christian, nor even that one has to be Christian to have a favorite bible verse*. But I must strongly disagree with you that the question does not *imply* this. Because I feel fairly certain that it does.

*My favorite is 2 Kings 2:23-24

And he went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

The LORD doesn't take any crap from the punk kids these days either. Mock a prophet, get torn by a bear.

It probably says something about my unhealthy obsession with bears, also. My favorite stage direction is from A Winter's Tale. Exeunt, pursued by a bear.

This reminds me of a Greek myth. Once, a tamed bear was given to the sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia. While playing with a young girl, the bear scratched her eyes out. Naturally, the girl's family was upset, and they went to the sanctuary and killed the bear. Afterwards, the village was struck by famine. Villagers asked the Oracle of Delphi for its source, and the oracle reported that Artemis was angry for the death of her bear. As punishment, every Athenian girl had to "play the bear" before being allowed to marry (Athenian girls were generally married by 15). I don't know how literally it was taken initially, but it apparently became a ritual as part of a festival (arkteia).

There is a lot of pandering here, on many levels. To start with, I'd like to know if Russert thought of that question himself or someone else wrote it for him. Because the person responsible should be taken out back and caned for awhile.

The question sums up in a nice "sound bitey" way my problem with politicians specifically and the American Populace in general.

The implication that having a favorite Bible verse is equivalent to having Faith. The implication that Faith is required to be President. The implication that only those of Judeo-Christian persuasion are qualified to be President. The fact there are millions of people in this country who believe, vehemently, in all three of my last sentences. The implication that Faith should matter as much (or more?) than Reason in goverance. The fact the media cannot think up more substantive questions. And the fact the media knows if they did ask more substantive questions, the candidates would retread their "glossy brouchure" answers because they are unable to *answer* substantive questions. The fact the candidates do not have the time and/or the intelligence to answer substantive questions. The implication that the Democratic Party is the party of Godless atheists and infidels.

I could go on here, but I really shouldn't push my blood pressure any higher.
