For those of you who are bored, it's Wednesday back in the office or Tuesday and you've eaten as much ham as you can stand, and are poking about the interwebs.
I'm working on themed mix discs, and am opening the door to suggestions.

The first theme is 'California' and I've done a search for songs with California (and Los Angeles and San Francisco) so now I'm starting to dig deeper. There is no need to suggest "I Love LA". "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" (Or perhaps "Los Angelenos") should suffice to acknowledge that LA exists.

The next set is the four classic elements. I'm trying to get enough material that I can get a semi-coherent 'sound' for each element. We'll see how that works out.

I do love both Phantom Planet's "California" and The New Amsterdam's "Letter's From California". I can upload either if you haven't got them for a listen.

I can also recommend, after more thought "Screenwriter's Blues" by Soul Coughing, which is a bizarre little song about LA, or possibly also Cake's "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle" which is sort of a California anthem. :)

I am interested in all of these. (:

Adam Ezra, "California", from Sessions.

~Sometimes I think the strongest people hurt the most
No matter what they do, or dance, or think, or say
And I miss California rising up from the coast,
In my dreams and in my head

It's alright, there'll be other times
California's just another dream of mine
Oh, they come and they go, so slow

I think that if I walk the straightest line that I can
I'll only think of how much straighter it could be
And there's the thought of California in my head
I'll grip it tight and carry it close to me

It's alright, there'll be other times
California's just another dream of mine
Oh, they come and they go, so slow

Sometimes I wish that I could think in words
Except for all the times when I don't have to... speak
And I see California laced in colored swirls
Showing me the parts of me that will be weak

It's alright, there'll be other times
California's just another dream of mine
Oh, they come and they go, so slow
So slow, yeah, so slow, yeah, so, so, slow, yeah

"Beverly Hills" by Weezer, of course. There's a selection of songs by Everclear that would work nicely, the most obvious being "Like a California King," though I prefer "Santa Monica." No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" would have to go on any California mix I made, personally. A band called Dead Girls Corp. covered Missing Person's "Walking in L.A." Don't know if that's any good, though.

Hmmm. I have a Hagfish cover of Walking in L.A. but I'll have to look into the rest of this. I didn't realize that Tragic Kingdom was specifically about Orange County, and will have to go back and listen again.

If you're into alt-country, I See Hawks in LA has quite a few California songs. "I See Hawks in LA" and "Humboldt" can both be downloaded for free (scroll down).

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication" seems an obvious suggestion...I might have to give the element one some thought and report back.

This may not be helpful, because they're both LA, but "Still in Hollywood" feels essential for me, and definitely second [livejournal.com profile] miss_electra's vote for "Screenwriter's Blues."

The elements, I have no idea, which is vexing, as I tend to obsess about them so. Well, water, but it's more ocean than just water, I guess. Hm.

Still have no music icon.

Still in Hollywood is definitely on the list. And L.A. is a rather sizeable part of California, speaking culturally, so I can allow perhaps two songs. However, that means I'd have to trim 'Heartbreak World'. (:

And you should feel welcome to steal what I've got for music icons, although most of them have coyotes in them. (:
