On mix discs

I have friends who also make mix discs. They occasionally use songs I already have. I don't want to save four or five copies of the same song in iTunes, but in order to have a back up (in case of disc damage or loss) I don't really see an option.
iTunes needs soft links, like Unix has.

What I do is, I look up the original source from which the song came and then I change that data in iTunes. If someone gives me a compilation with songs I already have, I just use the one copy of the song that has good data. I will still have however many backups, but my iTunes library isn't full of duplicates.

So... you tag the file with multiple track numbers and album names? iTunes does have soft links?

No, I just tag the file with original source's information. If someone gives me a compilation with "Pale Shelter" by Tears for Fears, I look it up. I can then tag the song as track 3 of 10 from "The Hurting". If a song is included on more than one album, I just pick one, usually the earliest appearance of the song.

I am pretty lazy, so I make a play list for each disc, and link the good copy of the song in the playlist.

Hrmm. I should have thought of this, given that it's what I do for the mixes I make.
