I am, perhaps more than most, ready to give some slack to a retelling.
However, when you decide to tell a story about people named George Washington, Ben Franklin, King George, and Johnny Tremaine, and they all work in a tailor shop in Chicago in 1820, then maybe it's time to reconsider if using those names is worth the tension it generates in your audience.

I think, once I get past that, I may enjoy Merlin The Series. Or maybe in later episodes they'll show me why those names are important to the story, if I keep watching.

I admit, I'm hooked. I'm trying to regard it as a pastiche (although, really, I suspect it fails even at that), but... oh, hell, I'll admit it. I'm there entirely for Tony Head being all sexy and ambiguously amoral. I'm such a total sucker for that man. :P

Also, the kid who plays Merlin is adorable. In a totally "I want to scruffle his hair and give him a cookie" kind of way, not anything else, but... I have a nasty suspicion that may change in a few years....

Give it a few more episodes, hon. It's shiny and cracktastic good fun.
