WTF?

Apparently, *this* DVD of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon only has half the subtitles. Thanks, Sony. I guess it's back to Iron Monkey.

Dude! That happened with a copy I had, too. Must have been a bad pressing...?

Actually, on further investigation, it may be the television. It looks like the bottom line is getting cut off, and so I'm only seeing the first line of dialogue if there are two lines.
If it were a conventional television, I'd adjust the V-Hold. I'm working on figuring out where that is on this television.

This is actually a known issue, and quite a frustration for home theater buffs - the commonly accepted practice of putting one line of subtitles in the picture and one in the letterboxing means that people who are trying to eliminate the black bars through constant height projection (or just regular folk watching a film in 16x9 aspect ratio on a 16x9 TV) have to deal with missing subtitles. Supposedly there are some software-based ways to deal with that on DVDs, which might be worth looking into, although I'm guessing you'll need to be using a computer as the playback device in order to implement them.

Less frustrating, now that I know. Thank you.
At least I can still use the laptop to watch it--I'd like to see if it's any better the second time through.

I watched Firefly--I bet I already *know* Chinese.
