Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

I saw it once in the cinemas and wanted to see it again, in the hopes that this time I'd notice whatever I'd missed the first time and everybody else loved. It is still not a bad movie.

I am amused that the voice actors all sound like they just walked off a Merchant/Ivory set (except Dark Cloud, who sounds like Father Guido Sarducci), and it made me think of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and now I want to see Howard's End with wuxia.

I enjoyed that movie, in fact, I own a copy on DVD.

But my friends and I joke that the era the film portrays was "before China got gravity."

A lot of it for me was timing. When I saw that, the only Hong Kong movie I'd ever seen was Swordsman II - which is fun, but goofy. So, it really was the first beautiful martial arts movie I'd seen, and going into the theater I was largely unaware that the genre existed. So it was a revelation. I think that's not an uncommon experience.

And I'll always be thankful for it for that, and it's a pretty darned good example of the genre, but now if you had to ask me my favorite Beautiful Martial Arts movie, I'd say Hero without much hesitation.

Okay, I think that makes a lot of sense.
