Calling out to the LJ brain trust

How hard is it to turn cassette media into digital (mp3) format?
One of the long boxes I thought was full of comics is full of tapes.

...Which reminds me. I still need to do something with my vinyl. Craigslist time!

Ow. I think I'll save up a little, and maybe buy that as my Christmas present or birthday present. But yay!

Are you willing to post your vinyl here?

Ummm. I can certainly give an idea of what's there, at least. (:

Thank you. I'm fond of old vinyl.

I plugged my auto-reversing Walkman into the PC's sound in port, recorded one big long .wav file with an old free version of MusicMatch Jukebox (you just need something that will record from the line in), then broke it up into individual tracks with LPRipper. The only caveat is to not do anything else with the computer while you're doing it, at the risk of getting brief snippets of songs dropped. Easy, but time-consuming.

Hrm. I wonder if I can use Audacity for the line in recording...

Oh, bonus points if you have something that can remove the tape hiss on the recording. I never claim that this method yields good-sounding results, but it's cheap and easy and it works. I've been very happy with LP Ripper, though others may have suggestions of other similar programs. It's not good enough to let it do the automagic track separation unchecked, but it's good enough to do 85% of the work by itself, and it's only $20.
