Things are different #17

Back home, when it snowed it came through and dumped on us for a couple of days then moved on. Around here, at least the past couple of weeks, it's different. (I know--we'll get to the time of year when the snow dumps on us. But for now.) It's... insidious. The snow falls in this light, easily ignored pointillist flakefest. Snow gradually accumulates on the ground; you turn around and suddenly it's gone from a light dusting to a quarter inch, and then more and more. You leave the house thinking "I was out there five hours ago, and it hasn't really been snowing" and when your foot sinks into the drift next to the front door, you're surprised. Like in the monster movie when our protagonists realise that they're surrounded.

Here, for your edification, are a few winter pictures.

This weekend we went to the Flint Cultural Center (I know, I know. "Flint has culture?" Whatever.) and visited the planetarium and a.... it's called a museum, but it's the sort that seems to specialise in diorama and displays rather than relics and artifacts. The first photo is from the Stepping Stone Courtyard, an interior garden within the square of the museum. The second is the Christmas tree in the lobby at the museum.

There was something about the little winged kid trapped in ice and surrounded by snow but still showing the greenery underneath that caught my eye. (PS: They're deliberately growing ivy in this courtyard.)

This one made me think of Windrose for some odd reason.

I can't imagine why. *vbg*

It was totally worth getting locked out of the museum for. (:
I just wish I could get a camera that would take pictures of what I see.

I'm sort of envious. It has been snowing off and on for DAYS here, sometimes really thick, huge snowflakes, but has not been accumulating much at all.

I mean, that's handy for driving and walking and all that good stuff, but if it's going to snow for 5 days I feel like the weather should have something to show for it.

Hee. I'm certain you'll get some to stick. And if you're lucky, it'll melt away before you're sick of it.

Right, unlike last Feb. :)

The kind of snowing you describe? I read and said "Oh, welcome to the Midwest." :)

So you're saying that you could have warned me?

[identity profile] tersa.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I could, but where's the fun in that? :D Wasn't it more wonderous to discover it first-hand?

Bah, I say. And then I also say Bah.
