Evening update

[Amanda]

Good: more rest, better pain relief for tonight, and the possibility of a room change to avoid the nice-but-noisy roommate.

Bad: instability in just about everything.

I don't honestly know what to say about CJ's progress today. This morning, his vital signs were up in the omg-too-high range again, but the doctor indicated that was normal and expected. This afternoon, things seemed to have calmed down again, and CJ slept for about 90 minutes without internal interruption-- no coughing to bring up phlegm from his chest, no wincing from a muscle spasm from lack of movement, no obvious change in temperature, and with nice, steady, calm breathing patterns.

And then there was this evening, when it all went south. He alternated between cold and burning up, his breathing was ragged and looked strained even when he was sleeping, and he coughed up quite a lot of gunk from his lungs. (Thankfully, all of it white with perhaps just slight tinges of yellow and once in a while a smidgen of blood, which is probably from his throat rather than the lungs themselves, and not worrisome.) I am beginning to doubt the 48 hour estimate, but I truly don't know-- cycling like this isn't unheard of, and the doctor declared the exact same symptoms as "normal" this morning.

Tonight, CJ gets codeine to help with pain (both from his coughing and from an unrelated elbow injury that he's set off a few times while reaching for things), which should help him get more restful sleep. We're also investigating the possibility of switching his hospital room, as he and his neighbor tend to wake each other up (CJ coughs, and Mr J wakes. A half hour later, Mr J moans, and CJ wakes. It's not good for either of them.)

I've heard that many symptoms often get worse in the evening, so I hope that this evening's worse symptoms do not last long.

And Amanda, I am really thankful that you are there taking care of him and keeping people updated. I'm glad he's not going through this alone. Thank you very much.

What the above comment said - it's good to know he's being taken care of.

Wishing him huge improvements and lots of love.
