cyrano: (Not what I seem)

It's hip to be square?

So the front page of the Daily Commie Liberal Rag today had an article proclaiming that 'beauties seem drawn to geeks'. Their justification, which they say 'is pretty compelling', is this: Jennifer Aniston is dating Vincent Vaughn. Heather Locklear is dating David Spade. Jenny McCarthy is rumored to be dating Jim Carrey. Kirsten Dunst might sort of be dating Andy Samberg.
I've never heard of Andy Samberg. He might actually be a geek. But the other three, to whom the article refers as a 'galoot', a 'dork' and a 'knockabout funnyman', do not strike me as strong entries in the Geek category. This, of course, is secondary to the idea that four celebrity data points construe a sweeping new worldwide trend.
Now, if Salma Hayek starts dating Stephen Hawking, or Alison Hannigan were to start dating me....

The front page, The Front Page, THE FRONT PAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL OUT WAR IS ABOUT TO BREAK OUT IN THE MIDDLE EAST, CLOSE TO BREAKING OUT ON THE SUBCONTINENT, WORLD TRADE IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET AND THEY ARE PRINTING DRIVEL IN THE LOCAL PAPER? I NOW OFFICIALLY WANT TO SHOOT EVERY JOURNALIST WITHIN ARMS REACH.

This ends the periodic erruption of Mt. Friday. We now return to your scheduled broadcast, hopefully put out by the BBC.

In the interest of fair and balanced reporting, that article was about six inches (including photo of beautiful people) and the entirety of the front page above the fold was a *very* dramatic photo of the bombing of a bridge in Lebanon.

[identity profile] miss-friday.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, it was a fuzzy feature. Every paper is Required By Law(TM) to have a fuzzy feature on the front page. I still question the selection of topic. Certainly there is something more interesting going on in the world that fits into six inches.

And, perhaps, less based in fanciful musings and more based on actual evidence--which essentially was my reaction, yeah. (:

I happen to like journalists.

You've never heard of Andy Samberg!?
thelonelyisland.com?
Lazy Sunday (http://www.nbc.com/Video/videos/snl_1432_narnia.shtml)?
And Vince Vaughn's not a geek at all. He's always seemed like a jock to me.

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I have heard of Lazy Sunday--something about Narnia and Red Vines. And yeah, VV struck me the same way.

[identity profile] kuranes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
You should watch that Lazy Sunday link.

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I tried--the link appears nonfunctional. q: I went to the NBC website and couldn't find it there at all. I'm gonna check thelonelyisland out.

[identity profile] kuranes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.nbc.com/Video/videos/snl_1432_narnia.shtml

this link?

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Bah. Maybe it's just this laptop. I'll try again when I get home. q:

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Bah. Nope, two different browsers on two different computers. It just hates me.

[identity profile] kuranes.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
just google "lazy sunday" and go to the nbc link I guess..

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, did that before when it didn't work. It's working for you right now, yes? I mean, it's not something where everybody saw it and then it broke?

[identity profile] kuranes.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, works perfectly fine for me. Is the whole site not loading or maybe you just need flash or something?

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I may not have a late enough version of whatever the software is, because the rest of the page loads up just fine, and the player says it's 'Ready'.

[identity profile] hamgallon84.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Andy Samberg is adorable! I'm in love with him.

[identity profile] hamgallon84.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I would say no. He seems like more of a stoner.

[identity profile] hamgallon84.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Vince Vaughan is not a geek either.
David Spade is a geek.

[identity profile] phillipalden.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Nerds." "Geeks." Whatever term you use, brainy non-jock guys are totally cute and often have hearts of gold. It's substance over surface. Those stunningly beautiful guys are often stupid or self-absorbed. Give me a cute nerd with a good heart and I'll give you a lifetime of backrubs and unconditional support, (though I've already got my "computer nerd," whom I would not trade for anything.)

The whole wasting news space for this aside, mabye those stunningly beautiful women have finally got a clue.

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
So you think that some of those actors are actually geeks?

[identity profile] phillipalden.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I'd say geek, more "nerdy" maybe - but that seemed to be the way the story was presenting things.

Unless I missed the point of the article. I will admit I skimmed it more than really read it.

[identity profile] katie-in-london.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a total geek slut.
Intelligence is a huge turn-on.
So are glasses and acronyms.

Unfortunately, I always end up being attracted to the High IQ, Low EQ geeks...sigh.

If I could find an emotionally available AND intelligent guy, I'd be set!

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
So are you still in London?
(And do you think any of those actors are actually geeks?)

Talk Geeky Yo Me

[identity profile] katie-in-london.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
no, now I'm in SF ... but it's hard to change an LJ handle so it's just kinda stuck.

And no: actors are not geeks. necessarily. it's possible to overlap.... but unusual. more likely with the Techies. but even then, techies are techies, not necessarily geeks. I have dated about equal number of actors and geeks ... when I'm done being depressed over the big geek who just left me, maybe I'll do the numbers. I like numbers :) and glasses. and acronymys.... sigh.

Re: Talk Geeky To Me

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, there are definitely actors who are geeks. The more I hear about Elijah Wood, the more I know he's a big geek. (:
*hugs* for being depressed and yeah, smart is way sexy.
(Actually, I've heard it's easy to change an LJ name if you want and you can find a name that's not taken. A couple of my friends have done it in the past few months. But if you like the one you've got, then hang on to it.)
