Coyote Cinema: Easy A

For some reason, I thought this had been out a while, but we caught it opening weekend. It's very funny, it doesn't challenge you too much (but there was one moment of genuine surprise), and it pays homage to the eighties teen flicks to which it is beholden. (Although Amanda felt that, as a tribute to Ferris Bueller, there should be a bit after the credits.) The soundtrack is much the same--pleasant to listen to, with lots of covers.
It really had a chance to say something about the gender binary around sex, and I'm sorry it didn't take a step or two further in that direction. But I'm a sucker for literary references and so I had fun.
Coyote says three and a half wags.

I saw the preview for this in front of Scott Pilgrim and had much the same thought as you, i.e. that it had a real opportunity to address the double standard women deal with when it comes to sex, but it probably wouldn't bother because that might, y'know, make it deep and stuff and alienate the potential ATM machines teenage audience.

Glad to hear that it's at least smarter (and more enjoyable) than expected.

I can't say that I was surprised, just a little sad, especially since I think that the film's target audience would benefit greatly. They... it felt like they made subtle hints, but were afraid to come off as preachy

We got to see this at a free screening about a week and a half ago, and took a couple of friends to see it on Friday. It's RARE that I see a movie in the theater twice. But it was a wonderful movie. I loved how it poked fun at other teen movies, while being firmly in that camp itself. :)

And any movie that has "Bad Reputation," even if it is a cover, is a win in my book. :)

That would explain why I thought that. PS: Have you seen Runaways, and if so, will I be traumatised if I see it?

I haven't. I'm kinda scared to. I want to see the story, but I'm not sure if I can willingly sit through another Kristen Stewart movie. She hurts my soul.

Hmmmm. Quick check at IMDB says I haven't seen her act in anything. Jumper is a warning bell, as are the Twilight movies, but Robert Pattinson appears to be surviving them at least.

Maybe we'll see about some sort of strength-in-numbers group showing with a bottle of vodka and a copy of Sid & Nancy for emergency crash carting.
