Hunh.

I wonder if I might have found one of my migraine triggers.
I had a baked pork bun for breakfast.
Within half an hour, I was feeling fatigued and achey and a little queasy.
Within two hours I was getting a headache and I could literally feel the muscles at the base of my skull tightening.

MSG sensitive? My friend Mindy gets migraines from too much.

Duh. That would be what a smart person might consider. Especially if their head were not in a vise.

I wouldn't have suggested it had you not said pork bun :)

One assumes said pork was slathered in BBQ sauce? If so, I'd blame the sugar.

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There was BBQ sauce present, but not in copious amounts. I suspect there was more sugar in the bun, which was also sweet.
But not as sweet as the birthday cake yesterday. Is it possible the different forms of sugar create different reactions?

Very much so.

I'd suggest that you experiment with eating individual pieces of the meal and seeing what you react to, except for the part where you're likely to trigger more pain, and it could be an interaction between two things.

Is an allergy test an option for you?

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It is quite possibly an option. I'll discuss it with Doctor Lin.

[identity profile] moonlightnrain.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it's more a matter of what's with the sugar. It's the whole complex versus simple sugar thing. Sounds like the pork bun is a pretty simple carb there with just a side of protein, but no fiber. Or, you know, could be MSG which gives me a devastating headache.

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
MSG sounds likely, especially if there's MSG in the sausages that I bought last month. (That would have triggered these exact same symptoms then.) However, I'm an 'explore all options' kind of guy. (:
I'm cutting down on sugar, but I am not yet at the 'all of it is gone' stage. I may not ever.

Or sweetner. Look at aspartame symptoms - they are very migrainey...

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't *think* aspartame is the culprit on this. It sweetens the fruitywater that I drink a liter or so of every day, and if it had been a sugar free pork bun then they would have said something.

*echoes [livejournal.com profile] esmerel*

My first assumption was MSG. Gives me headaches too.

[identity profile] cyranocyrano.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems like a very reasonable assumption. I'm so used to eating at restaurants that are proud of their lack of MSG that I didn't even think about it.

[identity profile] roisnoir.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll third the MSG suggestion.
I know several people who get migraines and/or nasty reactions when they accidentally eat a little. It's evil, pervasive stuff.

[identity profile] mostuff.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll jump right in the boat with the MSG...

[identity profile] fayroberts.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too: MSG. But also aspartame/ other sweetner in the sauce? (Just going by what gives me the same symptoms.)

Ouchy! If it's additive-related, good news is it'll die down quickly and you can combat it with a shedload of water and paracetemol (rather than aspirin/ ibuprofen).

Be well soon!

Today? Totally better. Whatever it was is flushed out of my system.
