cyrano: (Bad Day)
[personal profile] cyrano
This was the first major set back on the new diet.
Most days, I'm getting ten to fifteen grams of fat a day, comfortably under the twenty I'm targeting. And aside from "God an In and Out animal style would be AWESOME" once in a while, it doesn't feel like deprivation or torture. I get hungry every three or four hours, and if I don't watch myself I get dizzy and hypoglycaemic, but that's the worst of it.
Tonight (....last night) I couldn't sleep. And I was cold, which is no longer that unusual. And at about two-thirty I started getting hungry too. I started reading Seanan McGuire's October Daye book (which is pretty awesome so far and tastes like San Francisco a lot like Dirty Job did), because reading usually makes me sleepy. But I just got hungrier and then I started getting shaky.
So around three-thirty I snuck downstairs. I had a yogurt--a touch of fat, and usually that's about what I have for first breakfast. Nope, still starving and shaky. I had pickles. An orange. The last of the lovely fat-free coconut water lemon sorbet. Now I was starting to feel bloated, cold, hungry, and shaky.
Finally, I burrowed under the collection of crap on top of the refrigerator and fished out the remnants of the bag of buffalo bleu cheese crisps that I'd stashed up there and left hidden when I found out about my broken GI tract and dragged it back to my room and ate them while I hid under the down comforter.
Now I'm warmer, I'm not hungry, but there are twenty-one hours until the end of the day and I've already had about half my allotment of fat for the day.
It could be a lot worse, but I'd prefer it weren't.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say "It's probably okay for you to have one day once in a while in which you go over the 20 grams by a little, so long as it's not often, and your overage is not excessive." I'm not a doctor, of course, but I doubt very much that your body is going to go "Ahhh, he went over the limit, produce triglycerides to punish him!" I'm pretty sure the point of the 20 gram limit is just to give you a guideline for overall dietary fat reduction.

So, if you've already had 10 grams, and you end up having another normal-day's-worth 15 grams, you're fine.

I also think this is a safe bet, at least until Friday's conference confirms or revokes.

Heh. Next time that happens, you need to go for protein. Part skim mozzarella cheese sticks, or a tablespoon of peanut butter, or a piece of skinless dark chicken meat, boiled egg ... that kind of thing.

The shaky hungry thing is rarely resolved with carbs like oranges, coconut water, etc. I'm guessing the sugar balance in that yoghurt overcame its protein portion.

And I think that's what threw me--the first thing I did was go for my reliable fat free source of protein, with some sugar for the shaky thing, and it failed.

While listening to this podcast today, I wondered if the second question (which was about "Mitochondrial Disease (Cytochrome c oxidase deficiency or Complex 4)") has some relevance to you?

I couldn't find your post where you said what your problem is. His answer was try coconut oil as a fat, there are reasons to think it will be metabolized better than most fats, and the paleo diet will be generally useful (though go much higher carb than most would).

Any how, I hope this was of some use.

What I've got is Chylomicronemia, and I know that I don't seem to have 'digestive issues' but it certainly couldn't hurt to give it a listen.
