cyrano: (Clean *ALL* the Things!)
Tonight I unearthed a postal box from BPAL, orange tape and box adhesive intact, almost exactly five years old. At first I thought I'd just never opened it, but it's full of stuff I recognise. The really weird thing is, apparently after five years of aging, Western Diamondback has a more complex smell than when I first acquired it.

Part Two.
There's still the acrid/citrusy note in the bottle, but it quickly vanishes on the skin, and the leather quickly rises, warm and dark.
I'll use it sparingly because (a) I hear it's a chick magnet and (b) much like the anise pastilles I like, it's apparently been discontinued. So I'll want to make the sample last a while.

BLACK LILY: Breathtaking darkness, a vision of grace in shadow.
Pretty straightforward, smells like lily. Soft and delicate. Nice, if you like that.
cyrano: (Daisy 13)
La Belle au Bois Dormant: Plumeria and white pear, Damascus rose, tuberose, magnolia and evening dew.

This is nice. I'm getting the magnolia, the rose and a hint of the sweetness of the pear. (If I knew what plumeria smelled like, I might get that too.) It's very light and relaxing--there was none of the heaviness I was expecting when I saw magnolia and rose. I approve.

Kumari Kandam, named after the fabled sunken city: Thick incense, clay, stone, and hothouse blooms with a spike of frost, a hint of decay, and heavy, dolorous aquatic notes.

I'm definitely getting the hothouse blooms and the aquatic notes and the incense. It's a robust scent. Honestly? A bit overwhelming for me. Maybe the clay and stone are making it heavier? But it's something I'd expect to smell in a humid, lush setting like Louisiana or Babylon.

High Desert--today was Coyote layered over Diamondback. Which was nice, but not as nice as just Coyote.

From the website, Dee is: soft English leather, rosewood and tonka with a hint of incense, parchment and soft woods.
It's one that I'm pretty sure I've tried before, and really wanted to like. Fresh from the bottle, there's nothing but the sharp green smell of rosewood (and maybe the 'soft woods') without any of the softening or sweetening from the other elements. The effect does not seem to lessen over time, simply the magnitude.

Pusifoot says it's very nice on me, and she's getting mostly leather. My snoofer is apparently deficient.

In an attempt to find something to do with the 'vaguely sweet' Diamondback, I took it and Doc Constantine and dabbed a little of each on, calling the results "Doc Rassles a Snake".
Which turned out much like you'd expect--a sort of a sweet version of Constantine.
I should try instead tricking it out with something like Casanova, something I wasn't crazy about and might do with a little sweetening. I suppose that one would be called "Trouser Snake".
cyrano: (Daisy 13)
Casanova, says the website, is leather, anise, lavender, bergamot and amber with tonka, lemon peel and lusty patchouli.
In the bottle and immediately on me, it's... acrid. Sharp and not entirely pleasant. But as it dries, I'm growing more fond of it. The leather starts to come out, and the patchouli takes a back seat.

Today's smell is Doc Constantine, the other bottle of the soon to be discontinued Carnival Diabolique line that I bought. I managed to keep most of it in the bottle this time, at least.
The website says: Sheer musk, cedar smoke, fir needle, black amber and leather.

It's very dark and spicy. I'm getting the smoke note, and liking it. I may have to pick up another bottle before this goes away.
cyrano: (Diamond 13)
According to the website, Western Diamondback (of the soon to be discontinued Carnival Diabolique) is Oil with leather, tonka bean, red sandalwood, and sage.
All I get is a plant-like sweetness. It's pleasant, but I spilled half of the damn bottle accidentally knocking it over so essentially I spent ten bucks to get a whiff of 'vaguely sweet' every time I walk past the bathroom. q:

Calico Jack, on the website, is full of manly smells.
Sea air, rough musk, waterlogged kelp, worn leathers, and salty wooden floorboards of a pirate ship.
What I'm getting here is a meadow of sunshine and flowers near the seaside that somebody has frolicked through and lightly dusted with baby powder.
It's nice, but it's really not me.
cyrano: (Simon)
Today's report: The Antikythera Mechanism.

In the bottle: .....sort of cologne-y. The site says "Teakwood, oak, black vanilla, and tobacco." I think I'm getting some teak and oak.
The vanilla comes out more when I wear it. I wanted to really like this one, and I don't dislike it but I'm not crazy about it yet. Like most BPAL, it fades fast.
cyrano: (Diamond 13)
BPAL's Deep Ones is sharp and green and on me is rather bitter. I gave it to a coworker for whom it works much better.
cyrano: (Haring Dancing)
BPAL report: Black Forest

Dark and piney from the bottle; still dark and piney on me, but the musk comes out more strongly. There's something... sweet underneath, but I'm not sure what it is. I like this one, and I want other people to smell it. This could be a 'big bottle' scent.
cyrano: (Vindaloo Curry)
Severin: In the bottle and wet, all I get is a light citrus note. Not that I object, but the online description says 'black teas and and leather'. As it dries, I begin to get a hint of the leather. The scent is very subtle--only people who get close are going to notice it. I've tried this one before, and didn't recall the results. This may be why; it's nice but not particularly memorable.

Tersa suggests that the citrus note I'm getting is likely bergamot, since one of the teas is an Earl Grey. (I had no idea. I may have to try an Earl Grey now.)
cyrano: (Vindaloo Curry)
Very dark smell. The website doesn't mention what's actually in it, but people in reviews mention civet and clove and nutmeg. I'm definitely getting a dark musk. It's very masculine, and it's getting positive reviews at the office. I can see ordering a full bottle of this.
cyrano: (Vindaloo Curry)
The BPAL order came in today--much quicker than expected.
There were the ones I ordered:
Mead Moon, Doc Constantine and Western Diamondback in the big containers and Black Forest, Antikythera Mechanism, Calico Jack, Casanova, Dee and Golden Priapus in the imps.
There were also a buttload of random gift imps:
Kumari Kandam, La Belle au Bois Dormant, Rakshasa, Black Lily, Satyr, Deep Ones and Severin.
They must think I'm really going to like Kumari Kandam because I got two of them. (:
cyrano: (I crave compliments)
Since it's a pain in the butt to slog through the site and find scents I want to try and then get to the actual eventual buying of them. So this is a placeholder entry for me.
