I don't think that they even believe it. It's just cruel cynical blather for the sake of being mean spirited. I happen to like a little cruelty, and decidedly enjoy cynicism, but this kind of shit? Makes me want to punch the people spreading it in the teeth.
See, and I thought God would've been like, well, you dropped a bomb on them that was even worse, and decided that was probably more than enough, then gone on to wonder why humankind had such trouble with His "thou shalt not kill" rule.
And never mind the fact that we had carpet bombed most of the *rest* of the country nearly into oblivion before Hiroshima/Nagasaki. The reason they were chosen? They were among the few cities untouched (as well as Kyoto which was also considered and fortunately discarded as a viable target for the atom bomb).
So much of modern Japan is concrete jungle and the reason for this is that much of the country *had* to be rebuilt after the war, so much of it had been destroyed.
