If while taking a shower at the hotel you notice the tiling over your head and test to see if it can be lifted out. (Reasoning: If dirt or dust pile out, the hot water is still running.)
You investigate the space beyond and think "Well, it's too slight to bear a body, but if the police/gangsters/aliens/whatever break into the room, the MacGuffin could be stashed up there."
