cyrano: (Man in Glasses)

These are both going to be quick: I'm supposed to be studying my lines.

Haywire was less the frenetic 21st Century action flick that I was expecting and more the tense slow moving seventies spy/intrigue film. It's gritty, not glamorous. It feels real. The fights look painful. And girls get beat up, which was a little difficult to watch but at the same time it was kind of awesome to see a woman character treated as an equal.
And our lead can act--apparently harvested from professional fighting, which explains her capacity there, she also stands against old hands like Bill Paxton.
Three wags.

One for the Money is a conversion of a book (first in a series) that A. was very fond of, and she propelled me to see it. Katherine Heigl has been, from what I've read, a name to avoid in most films, especially for feminists and people who think with brains. But I liked her in this film. She takes a job she's not qualified to do because she needs cash. She's not bad at it because she's a chick. She's bad at it because she's untrained. And she learns. Yeah there's a guy, and there are two guys, but I like the relationships. And I thought the movie was funny in a lot of places. It may be a little late to say "Go see this movie and maybe they'll make more" but I liked it.
