There's a thing in the gaming community, largely with the indies and small publishers, that I really like. I think it started with Evil Hat; that's the first place I saw it anyway. When you buy a dead-tree medium copy of the book, it comes with an electronic version as well. Kind of like if you buy a movie they sometimes package a DVD, a BluRay, an Ultraviolet, and whatever color comes after ultraviolet.

I am hoping this catches on in publishing. Specifically because I'd like to own a physical copy of the next books in the Urban Shaman and Dresden Files series, but do not particularly want to carry them around with me.

It's happening in comics now too, Marvel does it at least.

(Although I consider it fair game to format shift anything I've paid for, so I'll cheerfully DL e-copies of books I own.)

Also, FWIW, I think Angry Robot (Chuck Wendig's publisher) offers this option.
