Midas in my touch, Delilah in my hair
Jul. 3rd, 2001 12:15 amDammit all to hell. This is one of those few instances where perhaps having a web-based journal client works against me. I've just lost everything I wrote when Exploder did its eponymous task and crapped itself into freezing up and now I'm rather soured on the task of re-writing all of that.
However, being stubborn and slow to learn, I shall proceed to recall as much of it as I can. Here we are.
--------------------
The Faerie Foofaraw was this Sunday, and I was persuaded to garb myself as a satyrical Victorian/Neo-Classical type. The 'mate was a stunning dryad, Megs was a charming naiad (perhaps oceanid, as she was most decidedly of the salt-water variety) and Laura was.... very purple. There was a lovely rose garden, and there were cats yay and Gayle stopped by to see us. (There will also be a Gayle tomorrow, we believe, at lunch.) And I got to say 'I see Queen Mab hath been with you'. And on the way home, Megs confirmed Trip's comment that I am, in fact 'a different sort of geek'.
Tonight I got out, once the mercury was beaten into submission, and saw Tomb Raider. I suspect it will occupy much the same niche as The Matrix, barring that my friends will probably not be as enamoured of it as of the Wachowski film. It was not as bad as I expected, and I was in fact pleasantly surprised. The soundtrack was better than the film, as in The Matrix, and the score (by the ever capable Graeme Revell) was very yummy and I want to buy it. Both side kicks were familiar faces, and I enjoyed their brief appearances. Which is good because I am not as taken with Mlle Jolie to the extent that my movie-going partner is. (Her review of the movie is more or less encapsulated in the phrase 'I now have a new person to be when I grow up'.)
Let's see... what have I gotten to see this season? Pearl Harbor. Mediocre, along the lines of 'Saving Private Ryan', in a very dramatic fashion. Atlantis, which was very good for a Disney cartoon and made me want to play with SteamPunk and reread League of ExtraOrdinary Gentlemen. Mummy Returns, which was pleasant in a sort of mindnumbing fashion. I'm probably forgetting something. With my luck it was the summer film I've seen that I was actually terribly pleased with. Good Christ. I'm right. Moulin Fucking Rouge. Which I probably raved about earlier in this selfsame journal. And a Knight's Tale which I'm certain I've said enough about earlier even if I said nothing.
I want to see the new Jay and Silent Bob. And Planet of the Apes. And Kiss of the Dragon (Jet Li says he's learned from mistakes in Romeo Must Die). And Princess Diaries, which I think I would enjoy despite myself. The star plans to attend Vassar, and rejected a three-film deal with Miramax because she didn't care for the first script they wanted her to do. I like teen actors with character. Very Natalie Portman of her. Possibly Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Affair of the Necklace looks good, but it's Dumas so of course it does. Memento, I think, too. Chocolat, if it's still in a cinema somewhere. Anyway. That's enough of my rambling wish list, I should be off to sleep.
