For those of you who haven't guessed, I've decided that I'm not prepared to deal with a third Christmas at the airport in customer service for United. I tried to get a position in Operations, I almost went for a transfer to the ramp up in Portland. And a couple of days ago I put in for a full time position in Comissary. That's the department that restocks the planes when they land and gets them ready to fly out again. Well, as it turns out, this is apparently a very 'flexible' position. It's not just comissary; from day to day the person in this position might be doing comissary or cabin cleaning or driving the bus between terminal three and the commuter terminal. Randy, the supervisor, is going to come in early on Tuesday morning before either of us work for final discussion, but he apparently wants me and if I say yes on Tuesday it's apparently a go.
Pros
Sounds like a lot less stressful. Right now I could really use that.
No customers shouting at me.
I'd stay with SkyWest. (I'm now eligible for profit sharing checks btw.)
My pay would stay the same.
I can keep working full time.
I'd get to work outside.
Cons
Working nights--14.30 until 23.00 or whenever things finally wrapped up at the airport. Sometimes midnight. (But no rush hour traffic.)
My days off would be 'floating'. I'm not sure exactly when I'd know what days I'd have off in any particular week. But I can't work more than six days in a row by California law.
Career-wise the position is seen as a dead end, if I decide to make SkyWest a career thing.
I'd see very little of the people I enjoy working with in CS. Basically none at all. (This is not to say I might not get to like the people I'd be working with in the new department.)
No hugs from tyee when she flies through sfo.
I'm not making this list to try and make up my mind. I've pretty much made it up already. If I don't get a position transfer, then I'm going to UPS or somebody who does a lot of holiday hiring and try to get myself hired on there. And I'd really really prefer not to do that. I really hope this is a change that makes things better. I don't particularly want to lose my shit but I can feel the scream building inside me.
