I am once again exposing my White Privelege. Because I need somebody to explain in small words something about the immigration issue. I understand why many in labor feel that the guest worker plan is a bad one--the idea that a corporation can basically blackmail employees by threatening to fire them and get them deported if they do anything inconvenient. But in an article I read today, UNITE HERE president Bruce Raynor says "There are 12 million undocumented people living here, who are important to the economy." So far, so good. I understand that. "They have a right to seek employement, and employers have a right to hire them." This is where I get confused. 'Undocumented' often means that they're in the country illegally, which I think would restrict some of their rights.
I don't understand the idea that somebody has gained entry to the country by breaking the law and therefore should be allowed to stay because they're already here. As a left wing socialist, I feel like I'm missing something.

More white privelege. I'm reading a lot about 'the new antisemitism' where arabs hate jews. (It doesn't sound that new, does it?) But my question here is, aren't arabs also semites? (As well as Egyptians, I think.) And, in fact, aren't most converted jews likely to *not* be from semitic stock?

Figgers. I post thought provoking (and comment provoking!) entries, and LJ's comment notification system goes all hinky. I had a wonderfully helpful soak with Miss Friday yesterday, and then a wonderfully helpful talk with WindRose last night. I think I can get through the week at this point with out actually tasering anybody.
Also helpful, a CD I can sing along with. Listening to new music is adventurous and nice, but there is a certain emotional catharsis that comes with singing. I may have to take advantage of this now that I've realized it. I'd consider karaoke if (a) I had a 'crowd' to go with (b) I could ever find somebody with a decent library.
Does anybody own a copy of:
Theme from S'Express
The Tapeheads soundtrack (mostly for Roscoe's but also 'Baby Doll' in Swedish)
Klaus Floride -- Bus Through the Barriers
I think I'm about ready to put the KBVR mix to bed, but I'd like to plug a few holes if possible. I should really consult with l2g on this project.
I just saw a trailer for "300". Does the whole movie take place in slow motion? I'm bored already.
