So today my new Docs arrived (Before my books! Where the hell are my books?) and I said Gee since I'm not going to the gym today would be an excellent day to start breaking them in. Because I'm a moron. By the time I got to my desk, I'd already broken the skin on both heels, because there's more walking than I'd really thought about.
SO. When breaking in a new pair of boots, I have been told that one should lace them tightly at first, and that one should lace them loosely at first. I no longer know who to believe.
I think I'll just go out and club a moron.

Your friendly neighborhood Boy Scout here! Wear your boots like normal when you break them in. And as you've figure out.. start slow. :/

Eek! Are you going to get through the night alright? Want me to bring you your old boots?

If I were still working at the old location, I'd probably have been just fine. We had a 'back door' into the secure area then, but now I have to go all the way to the front of the airport and then all the way back.

I think I'm going to be fine--I sat down and kicked the boots off, and then I got bandaids and doubled my socks and stuff. I can pretty much stay put until the end of the night at this point, so just the one more big walk.

Duct tape works too. Or you could spring for moleskin but duct tape is cheaper.

Just a single layer across the achilles tendon?

Careful with the duct tape, ducks... it sticks a little TOO well to some people's skin. Like scarring too well. YMMV.

If you aren't too busy, give me a call?

Especially if the skin's already broken.

Didn't know that...

I wouldn't have either, except a friend was in a theater production once that required her breasts to be taped. They always used gaffer's tape, which apparently one uses for that kind of thing. One night they couldn't find it and somebody grabbed the duct tape instead. I shall omit the unhappy and simply state, "REALLY, incredibly, utterly bad idea."

Wear some nylon stockings under your socks to help prevent chafing. You can get knee-highs at the grocery store, usually. Look for "trouser stockings" or somesuch.

I've got tights, and they're some sort of acrylic stretchy thing. I'll also go a little more slowly wearing them in. (: (There's a... I'd say nearly a mile of walking involved in getting me from the parking lot to my work station.)

No no.. not tights, they're too rough. You want sheer nylon, for the slippiness.

If it's any consolation, I still haven't broken my docs in, and I've had 'em for two years. I haven't really been trying.. but I should.
