So I'm hoping I can blame this on the heat. However, today I put in a Steeleye Span CD in order to rip it and from that point on iTunes began to freak right the hell out. I was finally able to identify the contents of the drive it was in, but I was never able to play it. After I gave up and pulled the CD, iTunes began doing all the things I stopped using MMJB for--freezing up, taking a great long time moving from track to track, and failing to acknowledge CDs in the drive. Fifty-seven seconds to fast-forward to the next track on the CD, for example. Yes, I finally got bored and timed it. I've shut down and restarted three or four times. I've switched to the DVD drive, in hopes that perhaps the CD drive just needed its lens cleaned. And, in fact, the CD drive has become less and less able to play a CD. Which is sort of why I own the CD drive--to play CDs. The heat is also making me feel far less forgiving and full of zen. I really don't want this to be another 'we decided to install some nanny software to keep an eye on your copyrighted music enjoyment' incident, and there was no dialogue box requesting to install software.
I think that I will restart again and go to bed, to try to increase my peace.

FYI:

Sometimes my iTunes does a memory leak thing, which is not solved by closing it and re-opening it. I have to close it, kill the process by hand, and then re-open it. After which everything works spiffily.

I suspect the CD player is either tohtendrive or the wiring has come loose, as I can no longer get the computer (not just the iTunes software) to recognize any discs in it. ):
However, even in the DVD drive, I'm seeing really slow interactions between iTunes and a CD. I'm pretty sure I shut down the computer and rebooted it.
