I'm not feeling a great deal of work satisfaction currently.

One of my friends is having 'sugar issues' which is what I thought of when I saw this article today.

Also, does anybody else see the irony in Ted Kaczynski's journal being auctioned off online? I am strangely fascinated by this idea, and yet repulsed as well.

And whoever set up this photo deserves a god damn raise. Michael Chertoff with a sainted halo, the beatified servant of God on earth--that is POLITICAL GOLD.

It's so true. The more sugar I eat, the more sugar I want. That stuff is poison.

So did you read the article? Does it provide you with anything new or useful?

Yes and not really. I sort of intuited all that. And yet I keep poisoning myself... like a true addict.

Which is, pretty much, the premise of the article. I still think, however, that most of *my* self destructive eating habits are psychological rather than physiological.

Hate to say it, but if you read the article carefully, it reveals the whole premise is likely to be horse-hockey. No clinic studies done, quotes by other experts who've read the study saying it is hypothetical.

Typical SF Chronicle though.

I'm guessing this is the sugar article rather than the Unabomber one. (:
I'm glad somebody got around to reading it, as I haven't yet. I'm always dubious about reports that say 'it is not your fault as you are a helpless victim' but no clinical studies doesn't mean the idea is automatically bunk. A hypothesis is just an idea in need of testing.

The guy quoted is not some random yahoo with a book out, but a long time respected researcher.

I suspect fructose is more of the bad guy, the jump in obesity tracks with the jump in corn syrup production in the past 20 or so years. Yet another example of our fucked up agriculture subsidy system.

I've heard other sources give at least rumbling warnings about how the body processes the newfangled HFCS, and often enough that I'm doing my best to cut it out completely. Coke (kosher for Passover) is supposed to be sweetened with sugar, but I haven't been able to find anybody who stocks it for my occasional shot of Black Death. I guess also Coke in Mexico (given that Mexican corn farmers don't have the political club that the mega-agro here does) is also done with actual sugar.

It seems fructoce ties up the liver, thus leaving the fat and sugar in your blood longer than needed, leading to diabetes and heart disease. Eat fruit, not juice or worse.
