Wow. I just got an email from Dell support. I've posted it and my response

Hi,

My name is Todd and I'm a customer advocate here at Dell's corporate headquarters. We saw your blog post from the 18th that you were having problems with your Dell notebook. Were you able to get that problem resolved?

If not, feel free to email me the service tag of your system and I'll take a look at it and try to help you get the problems fixed. The service tag can be located on a sticker attached to the bottom of the notebook.

Please let me know if there is any way that I can help, and I'll be glad to do anything I can.

Thank you,

Todd

Hello, Todd! Let me first say that this letter was very unexpected. I couldn't decide whether it was delightful or creepy at first, but it's a public blog post and so I think I'm going with delightful. As a former customer support type at AltaVista, I'm fascinated by the support model and curious as to how it works.

However! On to the latop.
The sticker came detached before the computer arrived, and so I need to get the identifying code... as soon as I remember how to find it. I'm supposed to do something during startup, like hit Escape or Alt-4 or something clever, and I can't recall what. But if she sits on the couch and doesn't do a lot of travelling, she's a much happier laptop.
The battery, I suspect, is dead because I leave the computer plugged in and it's probably one of those batteries that doesn't like being plugged in all the time. I currently have about six minutes of battery life, so long as I don't do anything energy intensive like listening to a CD.
Earlier in the summer, I had an issue where the computer wouldn't boot--I'd power it up and it would sit on a black screen with a flashing cursor--but I attribute that to the heat we were experiencing, because it worked fine after about a week and hasn't done that again.

Thanks for the email!
