I'm pretty sure that it was ten years ago that I moved to California--alit on a doorstep the day before Thanksgiving with the promise of a place to stay for a few months while I found my feet.
Apparently my feet were much better hidden than I'd thought, but I eventually made it. Sort of. But I apparently got to attend Merlin's very first Orphans' Thanksgiving Dinner, and met a lot of new people, and I owe a lot of people an awful lot.
The names below are people without whom I would not be here--either I would have had to move in with my parents in Idaho or an underpass on 101 or just buried somewhere quiet and grassy.
My initial plan was to take these people to dinner, as a recognition and an appreciation. But money is a lot tighter than I'd hoped, and have you ever tried to plan a large gathering with these people? Even for somebody who herds cats professionally? So instead I post their names publically, for those of you who stop by here to see my veneration and to know that these people are important to me.
If you think your name should be on this list, you're probably right, and the blame is on me for not remembering.

Date: 2006-11-16 06:30 am (UTC)(I moved there sort of before _and_ after, having a Summer Internship from June - September 2006, and then moving back full-time in December 2006.)
I'll probably always miss that brief era where nearly everyone I knew was mobile, looking for tech work, and drawn to the Bay Area for one of the great boom times of history. A very nice convergence, and one I realize is historically unusual for _anyone_, though it just seemed like what happened to people after college to me, at the time. I'll never have so many active friends again. This is okay, but I'll always have very fond memories of that shining, underappreciated period. I kind of wish I'd been slightly older, and through the emotional and financial uncertainty that colored my twenties, but you get the life you get.
