So. The first (so far only) black man we see in Chicago. Is a drug dealer.
That makes me sad.

Hnh. You know, you are right. That's pretty depressing. And we've only seen... one black woman so far? I know that it's not always the easiest to cast minorities in Vancouver, but if you are setting the show in freakin' *Chicago*, make an effort.

But Morgan is so off-book I'm kind of puzzled why they went with a black actor for the role. I hate to say it but I've sort of nicknamed him "Token" in my mind. Of course I don't understand the changes they made to Murphy either.

I will say, though, that last night's episode convinced me that I no longer need to watch this show so at least some good came of it.

I only have a passing familiarity with the books, so none of this stuff bothered me. I sort of liked last night's episode, but after this season's BSG, maybe it's cos I have low expectations ;)

If I was going to let minority representation in television bother me, I wouldn't watch any television at all.

Eh. I generally don't care very much about sticking to the book looks and race for secondary characters, if the looks/race aren't significant to how the character works, and if the variety stays representative. Since Morgan's race doesn't affect how he relates to either the High Council or Harry, I'm happy enough that they made at least one reoccuring character black. Especially since he's nicely ambiguous.

Yeah, I managed to forget him too. But still, the supporting characters have been awfully white for *Chicago*. Given that the real city has pretty much equal percentages white and black.

Though the books tend to miss this too, IIRC.

So was there anything in particular that made you decide you hate the show, or was it just 'it has been five episodes and I'm still not interested'?

Mostly the latter, also I don't particularly like Harry which makes investing in the show more difficult. If it were more of an ensemble thing I could get over that.

If they stuck with the books, this would be a very, very, very white cast.

With the occasional hispanic red court vampire. As *bad guys*.

I'm all for the race changes they made. Definitely better for TV.

Yeah it would totally be a lily white cast, no question about it. The issue for me is, change the race of the actor if it's going to add to the stories you want to tell, if it makes sense to do it beyond the question of demographics. But to be honest of all the changes they've made from book to screen that's the least of my concerns. The Third Eye thing last night and the change in Bianca's character seemed just weird. And changing Bob from an air spirit to a ghost is utterly lame.

Gotta disagree with you on the Bob front. Making him human, instead of a human-like air spirit, gives him a lovely amount of backstory that's all but lacking in the books. It's a backstory that I know (from reading episode synopses of things to come) will play out over the course of the season, too.

The change in Bianca's character's also much preferred, far as I'm concerned. Giving her a more human side, making her a more shrewd politician, rather than a histrionic bad-guy? Yes, please. More of that.

Whereas I think the whole air spirit concept is way cooler, than basically a replay of the Rimmer character from Red Dwarf. ;)

And I see a hottie set there to give Harry a steamy sex scene and provide eye candy for the series. I like her better as this very alien and downright scary creature, much better than the standard "Vampire: The Masquerade" pretty goth tragic chick.
