Today was amazingly tiring. The first part was terribly frustrating--I felt like I did all the right things, only to end up beating my head against a familiar brick wall. Only this time I managed to beat a hole large enough to peek through.
My sister-in-law, who works for SkyWest, told me to go to SFO and talk to Nancy R-- about working for them. I had a name, and I had somebody on the inside working for me. I went to the website and downloaded their online application. I got half a day off from work. I went to Kinko's and printed it out. Then I filled it out. Took it and my resume, got up ugly early in the morning and went out to the airport.
So at first I couldn't find a counter for SkyWest. No problem, I knew they were associated with United, so I eventually went to the United counter. People had never heard of SkyWest. Then they had but thought there was no SkyWest at SFO. I mentioned that the SkyWest webpage had talked about positions available at SFO. They ummed and said why don't you try the courtesy telephone. I did that, discovering that no, SkyWest had no listing at the courtesy phones nor in the yellow or white pages of the phone book. I did try the United courtesy number, which connected me with a nice lady named Miriam in Chicago who said 'I see...' in a very knowing way when I told her the nice men at the counter told me to call her. We agreed she couldn't do much to help me. I called my brother's house for further info, but the line was engaged. Called my mom to find out if she could make contact with my brother's house. She sent him email, and within an hour he called me and said 'Hey, JJ's not home and I have no idea what to do'.
I was pretty pissed off at the thought of having flushed half a day of work down the toilet, but had gone far beyond the 'cutting my losses' stage when I went looking for the CalTrain shuttle. This involved going downstairs, and wandering through baggage claim. Where there was another desk, United Baggage Handling.
'WTF?' I thought to myself, and went to talk to them.
'Oh! SkyWest! That's United Express here. The only way to get out to them is go through the terminal to such a gate, and take a bus to their terminal way off in the middle of no man's land.'
'Ah. So I need to be an airport employee or a ticketed passenger?'
'Um. Yes, I guess so. Wait, and I'll try to call them.'
Now that sounded actually useful.
We actually got Nancy on the phone, and she said I was way far away from her office and I said yeah I was but I had an application and could leave it somewhere for her. She said why don't you come out to an interview at some United Airlines building on MacDonald Road on Friday morning?
I said sure, that sounded great, she said see you then and tell Jennifer I said hi. So I was in and got a good four hours of work still, and I have an interview just before I leave. Plus I actually accomplished things at work today.

Woo interview
Date: 2002-01-29 12:44 am (UTC)Hey, we missed you at Algorithm on Friday - you should send an email and let the group know you're still alive. I remembered that you'd said in LJ you were having migraines, so we sort of assumed that was why you weren't there.
