Then you should check out this two-part essay that Lilith pointed me toward this morning. I've never experienced real scarcity. I've lived on Ramen and 'borrowed' vegetables, but I've always had a kitchen and a couch. So some of this was old hat, but a lot of it was very enlightening. None of my current projects has any 'fringe' main characters, but it's going to be good to keep that dynamic in mind for some veracity.
