Villa 08--you can eat there.
Oct. 13th, 2009 03:33 amJust back off Castro, where the Golden Wok used to be, is the new Villa 08. I'd seen it in passing, with its fancy neon, looking like a trendy new nightclub on the outside, but hadn't eaten there until tonight.
They still have most of the garden, and the pool, which makes me happy. And the funky lighting scheme continues inside. (Which, on the down side, makes your food turn funny colors a la La Fondue.) The place was spacious and pretty clean, and because we went in at eight o'clock it was uncrowded. Also, the staff kept me in water pretty well.
And there was a lot of food. Sushi, dim sum, four different soups, salt shrimps, jell-o, soft serve ice cream... and for the most part it was perfectly edible. There was actual crab in the crab salad, and I think the baked goods were from Hong Kong Bakery. But the sushi had been out too long, and both the broccoli and the beef were rubbery and unpleasant.
Essentially, there's a lot of food if all you're concerned about is volume. All you can eat buffet tradition mandates that it not be terribly good. Sort of an Asian version of Golden Corral. I'm not sure what changes in the menu between lunch and dinner, but the price jumped $5 and while I might not have minded paying $12 for the meal, I thought $17 was exorbitant.
