cyrano: (Dark/Light)

So, just in time for everybody else to move on to The Next Thing, I've started playing the variety of MMORPGs that have a video component. I'm playing City of Heroes with Hedgepig, Violet Jones, Basari, and Basil Wrathbun (he's a bad guy).
I'm having a lot of fun with it, but I don't know how long I can continue soloing. (Probably exactly as long as it takes opponents to develop immobilizing or incapacitating powers.) Plus, I'm still experimenting with powers and costumes, so there's an element of novelty the missions don't always provide.
I can't do anything quickly that involves changing orientation or maneuvering, but that's me. I also had a weird experience that felt like some stories I've heard from women I know in real life. I was running across town when I got a pop up that "D3v1ls W1ngs" wanted me to join his party. I declined and kept running. Thirty seconds later, I got a repeat request. I didn't respond immediately because I was confused and I was busy. But I declined it again. And about forty-five seconds later, a flying character with membranous wings landed in front of me and asked me "want 2 team?" I started feeling weirded out, and said "I admire your tenacity." He asked "wat that mean?" I vascillated between logging out and bailing on the boundary violating situation and teaming up after all. I decided that I wanted the XP and it would be interesting to see what running in a (very small) team was like. But it was kind of creepy.

Yeah, that happens sometimes. A good command to learn is "/ignore ". I do find that most people respond fairly well to a "Not today, thank you." If for some reason that alone isn't enough to get them to back off (and if I'm in a mood that day, failing to respect a "Not today, thank you" is enough to get them /ignore'd), a I'd-be-a-bad-teammate reason like "I'm going to have to log off soon" usually does it. And if they can't take THAT hint, then ... I don't know, because I've never gone past that without ignoring them.

Pick-up teams aren't necessarily bad, but I'd avoid anyone who gives you the creeps, and I find that people who are not mature enough to leave you be if you don't answer them are also not mature enough to put up with on a team.

"no thank you" (with that exact non-capitalization and non-punctuation) has been my most typed phrase in that game. Usually in response to grouping, sometimes in response to supergrouping. Fortunately the latter was solved a little while ago.

May I ask which server has the honor of your presence?

I figure when the mad rush to devour WoW patch 3.3 subsides -- probably February -- I will be more likely to appear in CoH. For now, it's shelved, but I haven't regretted the purchase. I ported my Priest over from WoW to CoH, and she's turned into an annoying-to-stop attrition machine when solo. (But not juggernautical by any means.)

I'm on Infinity, and I'm noticing that lately the characters I create do very little damage but are very good at getting kicked in the face. I'm not sure what's up with that, but Miles Archer spends a lot of time flat on his back or in hospital.

Low levels can be very tough for the group-oriented archetypes (defender, tanker) due to anemic offense. For either of these archetypes I really, really recommend that you take your second build as soon as your level will let you; use one build for solo work (i.e. damage, probably your secondary) and the other for grouping (pimp out your primary, accessorize with secondary and pools).

Blasters and scrappers have little trouble soloing because they are all about offense. (Unless you intentionally build them wrong.)

Anyway, if you like to look before you leap, I highly recommend http://planner.cohtitan.com/planner and http://paragonwiki.com/

Ooo. Linkies!
And yeah, with my first two characters, Hedgepig is a Scrapper and Violet is a Blaster, so that's probably what I'm running into. Most of the Villains also look like they need team structure to keep from getting kakked.

Is that a game or a server?

It's a free online multi user questing and fighting game, currently in beta, associated with GaiaOnLine.com.
