cyrano: (You're a Kitty!)

As I said, yesterday was the trip to Cedar Point.... actually, in retrospect, it appears that I said nothing of the sort.
So. Yesterday we went to Cedar Point, a theme park in Ohio that I had never heard of before, despite it being the second largest one in North America. I found Lake Erie, and it felt kind of like an ocean.

At least there were seagulls, and itty bitty waves.
And there was a lot of walking, because the park does cover a lot of real estate. In the early afternoon, there was a rain shower, which cut down on the heat and humidity, and then an hour or so later there was actual *rain* which was pretty cool.

And I *know* I mentioned GenCon, even though I mentioned it a week too late to actually meet up with anybody. q:
The area around the Indianapolis convention center has a lot of lovely architecture, as I am about to show you. (:

This, I suspect, is Indianapolis's version of Nelson's Column. It even has a roundabout. There are fountains and it's festooned with carvings and apparently underneath it is a gift shop that's never open.

It probably didn't start out being called Elf Park, but I cannot imagine a better name for it with a horde of gamers in town.

You'll probably have to click through to the larger image to see the adornments on the building across the street from our hotel room. Also? Most of the people in those apartments don't close their curtains.

This church is just down the street from the CC, but vantage points were limited. (Narrow street plus construction.) So this was a quick opportunistic shot from the miniatures conclave.

This appeared to be a better angle, with fewer window panes, plus it didn't involve going out into the weather.

Not counting strip poker, the Union Station building was the thing I took the most pictures of. Although trains no longer stop here, they do go by with some noisy regularity. (I would recommend *not* getting a room at the Crowne Plaza for your stay.)

And at night, of course, it lights up.

This is me trying to get a shot of the big glass piece around the front (which is now a tiny parking lot next to the Omni) and pretty much getting a big dark blur. But, as we all know, it's the thought that counts.

My dad worked at Ceder Point when he was a kid, (back in the late 1930s/early 1940s.

He was a busboy who would set up the dining room while the Black jazz musicians were setting up and doing their sound check. They took a liking to my dad and would invite him out back to smoke a joint with them.

I went one year, but I hate Ohio. (My next-oldest brother and I were born on the San Francisco Peninsula.)

Shane, our handy tour guide, mentioned that pretty much the only thing that kept the place from going under in the thirties was the ballroom over the arcade.
Sounds like you enjoyed the concert! Yay!
