cyrano | Play the Game: Gamer Review (Reply)

I'm not even gonna bother with a cut for this one. I'd been curious about Gamer, because the concept at least seemed interesting, but I spent most of the movie on the verge of switching off. They never gave me an egregious enough excuse to do so, but I think they tried. The storytelling was uneven to the extent where at one point I was convinced that random bits of film had been clipped and tossed, there were no characters to actually give a crap about, and the action cinematography was of the 'thrash the camera around so you have no idea what's going on' style.
Which is unfortunate, because I think at the heart of this film was a story that could have been interesting. What's more unfortunate is that every time they had a choice between 'looks cool' and 'makes sense' they went the Steven Moffat route and embraced the good looking.
So essentially this seems like a movie in a fight with itself, occasionally interesting things happening or interesting ideas being pawed at with sleepy cat paws, and I didn't actually turn it off so I suppose it wasn't awful. But it's not going to get more than two wags from me.
