Coyote Cinema: Midnight in Paris
Jun. 19th, 2011 10:39 pmThis afternoon, Rose texted me and said "Hey, do you want to go see a movie with me?" And I allowed as how I thought that was a marvelous idea. With her being on the other side of the country, one might think this problematic, but we picked showings that were about the same time, allowing for time zone shifts, and just made certain there was an empty seat next to us.
I confess, I have not been a big fan of Woody Allen's latest works. The Greek chorus in Mighty Aphrodite made me laugh, but mostly just at the concept. So I was a little apprehensive. Plus, Owen Wilson's "I am ad libbing this but kind of poorly" style usually is not my thing. And yet, I greatly enjoyed myself. I saw the device coming, but it was still very effective. I squeaked when I saw Cole Porter, Josephine Baker and Toulouse-Lautrec, and I fanboyed right along with Wilson meeting these people. Gertrude Stein was very good, Salvador Dali was delightful, but Hemingway really stole the show for me.
It's a love story in that Woody Allen sort of way, so you'll spend a while wanting to smack our male lead in the head, but he's good natured enough that you still want him to be happy.
