cyrano: (sleepy)

This has been a semi-productive three day weekend. (New shift wierdness plus shift trade with a co-worker so she can go home to Beijing, catch SARS and come back and infect me. Next week I get a one day weekend.)

Friday I pretty much did bupkes--lay around the house, scurried out of Don's way when he came over to clean, read up on some stuff and plotted for the 7th Sea game. Then there was gaming, d'accord. Nice relaxing day, for the most part.

Saturday I was supposed to go pick up CDs from ebonlock but I failed. Was supposed to go see satyr69's play, but failed. (a: Driving b: about 200 miles c: on hwy101 d: to an unfamiliar place e: coming home after dark f: in the rain. Just couldn't bring myself to face it.)
So instead I drove about 20 miles on an empty road (I actually kind of enjoy twisty woodsy roads so long as there's nobody behind me trying to drive 70.) out to Russian Ridge and the redwoods between here and Half Moon Bay, and went hiking. Well, not hiking in the multi-day endurance-a-thons that my friends in Berkeley do. I don't think I did more than about eight miles. More like a 'tramp' than a 'hike'.
It was nice--evergreens and rain and it looked and smelled a lot like home. However, I realized about a third of the way back from my last trail, when my hands started to shake because I forgot to eat (it's a weekend--I always forget to eat.) that I'd done a lot of foolish things. First, the not eating. Second, out hiking all alone, on slick and rain-washed trails. Third, even if I'd brought the celphone along with me, there was no reception out where I was. There was no ranger/lifeguard on duty, so if I were to fall or hurt myself or otherwise be unable to get back to the car, nobody knew where I was or what I was doing and nobody would miss me until Sunday evening or possible Monday evening.
There's no overnight parking so the county might be cross and have my car towed, but....
Anyway. The Lady loves fools and watches over them. So I got back to the car, clothes ten pounds heavier with rain, and went to Dave's for board games and a dryer. Happy birthday, Dave, and thanks for the loan of a shirt.

Today I've picked up the mass of clean clothes that's been lying on my floor for months now (Which has, in a low grade way, been bugging the hell out of me all that time.), and picked up and vaccuumed some of the carpet in my room, double washed a load of whites in chlorine bleach, and finally admitted that winter is over by changing the flannel sheets for light cotton. My room is suddenly much more spacious.

I think if the county found an empty car out there, they would go looking for the driver.

Nevertheless... Sounds like a lovely day. :)

You know, if it weren't for doing absolutely foolish things, this world would be a dull drab, not to mention boring, place. So go hiking (or cliff diving or para-sailing) when you feel like it, and stop worrying!

There's nothing wrong with some foolish actions. But a little preparation--even just telling folks online 'I am going to go hiking this afternoon, but I'll see you all at Dave's tonight'--would be fine.
I've seen many of the same rules applied to people going on their first dates with people they meet on internet dating services.

I am once again torn between wanting to remind you of basic safety tips, and telling myself "He's a big boy, he can take care of himself. Or, should be able to."

No problem. I am well aware that my thought processes develop inconvenient and unexpected holes. It is only after four or five reminders on the same item for the same event that I begin to think of it as nagging.
