This is for people who say they cannot go to the movies unless there is somebody to go with, but not for people who say they would prefer to go to the movies with somebody.

Does this apply to watching television, too?

Nope. I can watch TV solo.
However, if I am, it's because I'm working on a project and not actually watching it. TV is something I can ignore.
I just need the background noise and something shiny to look at when I need to look away from my project.
DVDs are better, though. No commercials.

I like movies as a shared experience. Going alone takes all the fun out of it.

It's rare I watch television anymore these days. But when I do decide I want to watch something, I can certainly go it alone. Especially since some of the things I want to watch aren't things other household members really enjoy.

I tell myself I could got to the movies on my own if I had to...but I think I've only ever done it once in my life, and that was 20 years ago. :/

But watching TV on my own? I do that all the time. :) Kinda have to. But I definitely enjoy watching it with other people, depending on the show.

What about wanting to see a movie that nobody else wants to go to?

That was one of the things I was curious about. My suspicion is that if nobody else wants to go to, you wait for it to be on cable.

I go by myself, personally, because, hey, never mind the bollocks.

I tend to get involved in the story on screen, so it doesn't much matter whether I go with people or not.
Which is why I didn't ask myself that question.

I tend to be that way as well although, for something like Cabin In The Woods, it'd have been nice to have somebody to chat with about it afterward.

I don't see much point in going to the movies alone, since it's so expensive. The movie will be available online through Netflix or Vudu or something soon enough and I can watch it then for much less. I'm perfectly fine with watching movies/TV alone at home, though. I'm an extrovert so most of the time I think it's a lot more fun to have company for those kinds of things, but not always.

Going to the movies is primarily a social thing for me. I have gone solo a couple of times when there is something I really want to see in theater or I just want to kill a couple of hours at a matinee, but otherwise, I'll just catch it on DVD.

What is this "going to the movies" you speak of?

I went to the movies by myself once; it just served to make me more depressed than I was to begin with.

Not a big fan of going to movies with other people either. Too expensive. The rest of the audience is generally too rude. And unless the movie is truly exceptional, too much of a chance I'll fall asleep.

When you say "television" do you mean that in a 20th century sense (boob-tube) or 21st (you-tube + streaming service + etc)? Don't do the former (now so expensive it can be classified as highway robbery). Will do the latter in spades on my own.

'Television' was intended to encompass a passive visual storytelling medium that can take place in your home, as opposed to the specialized location and large screen.

I find myself often angling for the first showing on Sunday mornings--fewer audience members, usually pretty well behaved, and every once in a while I get really lucky and I have the house to myself.

I just did this yesterday in fact, to watch "The Hunger Games". Small audience plus $6 matinee pricing FTW!

I pondered a $5 showing of "The Raven" for just that reason. But I'm not sure it's even a $5 movie.
O Netflix!
