My lawyer thinks I should seriously consider Chapter Seven. Honestly, if I were smart I probably should have done it long ago. I have no real assets, and to the banks the amount I owe is probably not large enough to make them get snippy. I could maybe get back on top of this in five years, provided nothing bad ever happens to me in that time period. But I'm not that guy. It looks like I can get it done for under $2k if all goes according to plan. (I am sad that I don't have $2k in credit on any of my cards because the irony would make at least one part of the process fun.) The big concern I have is if one of my creditors decides to try to garnish my wages.

Well no. The big concern I have is that bankruptcy is what irresponsible people do, people who are out of control and have made foolish decisions, and so it's obvious what that makes me. Because that, dear children, is how my head is wired.

Seconding this. With the recession and so many people out of work through no fault of their own, the "credit score as character reference" paradigm is rapidly falling apart. Some people might still look askance, but fuck 'em. You're still a good person.

And I don't know whether it helps or not, but Donald Trump has filed for bankruptcy multiple times and is still considered pretty wildly successful. Admittedly, he was doing it as a way to game the system, but.

Nah, at this point filing for bankruptcy is like a miniature one-man show of Leverage. Take back your life! If this seems like an appropriate way of doing that.
