With the show over, last weekend we decided to go and catch a movie. There was a trailer for Warm Bodies on the Daily Show (I assume. I missed it.) and in order to accomodate the viewing tastes of the group, we decided to double up.

Hansel and Gretel does what it says on the tin; if you liked Van Helsing, you should check this one out. Flashy, lots of movement, and I seem to recall there being quips. I thought there was potential for some exciting subversion, but that vein was not tapped. They managed to avoid the 'women are evil' trope, but they were still big on the 'if you aren't pretty then you're evil' one. Gretel gets to look badass and strut around in a 'girl power' t-shirt but when it comes to action, she's mostly there to get her ass kicked, be taken captive, and give Hansel motivation.

Rent the DVD and keep your expectations low. Two wags.

Warm Bodies is George Romero's Romeo + Juliet. Yes, there are zombies, but in these 28 Days Later you get to see the world from both sides. And our man on the inside with the Deadite army is a jewel. He's a teenager doing what teenagers do--trying to figure out what he's doing here, trying to look like he knows what he's doing, and trying to get the girl of his dreams. He's funny, thoughtful, and big hearted, even if his vocabulary is a little limited. It's no wonder she falls for him. And like teenagers everywhere, together they're going to set this apocalypse on its ear. Rob Corddry puts in a good turn playing a dead version of the character he plays in other movies, and I really liked him here. This is a funny movie, and it made me happy. In fact, I was happy inside the first minute thanks to Nicholas Hoult's monologue.(X-Men fans may remember him as The Beast.)

I was good paying full price for this one. After brief deliberation, I say five wags.
