Coyote Cinema: The Raven
Apr. 21st, 2013 04:04 pmI had heard some pretty awful reviews. But I had clothes to fold and wanted something I wouldn't feel the need to pay much attention to. And now my clothes are all folded.
Yes, it's a writer who helps cops solve crime in a gritty nineteenth century Baltimore, so it's a steampunk Wire Meets Castle. (Especially since, for the first hour, I was convinced they'd hired Dominic West to play Inspector Fields.)
And I giggled like a lit student when Rufus Wilmot Griswold was sliced in half as the second victim, but was confused given that the rest of the film was more or less designed to give lit students fits like a rabid author.
Oh yes. I went there.
EDIT: I almost forgot, I was also pleased to see that the kidnapped girlfriend got to do something besides sit around waiting to be rescued. Even if she wasn't very successful, she got to try.
I was glad I watched it once, and that I had something else to pay attention to while I did. I don't think I need to see it again, but I won't flee the room if it's on. That sounds like a solid two wags to me.
