cyrano: (Coyote Cinema)
[personal profile] cyrano
I was pretty much sold on this one from the trailers.

Luc Besson> Martin Scorsese. Robert DeNiro. Michelle Pfeiffer. It's like a damned Who's Who of mobster movies. And, in fact, they poke fun at themselves once or twice on this count. Characters have depth, the family behaves believably like a family. The girl gets to be the kick ass, while the boy schemes and manipulates and makes friends with crucial people. There's a delicate balance between humor that doesn't go out of its way to be slapstick and violence that doesn't either. There are some brutal moments in this film. (But don't worry, the dog is okay.)

I only had two quibbles. Firstly, as the family is arriving, they think 'oh yeah, we should probably have cover identities in this latest of our innumberable witness protection set ups.' And Marty *knows* it doesn't work that way. Also, they go out of their way to cast the daughter as the warrior, and at the climax she becomes the helpless female running away so she can be rescued. Which was frustrating.

Coyote says four out of five wags.
