Larry: ????-2013
Nov. 4th, 2013 10:10 amLike every other person in the office, Larry had been there longer than I. He was cold at first, giving me the scaly eyeball any time I'd come near, and pretending he had urgent business on the other side of the tank. But eventually we came to an agreement and any time I'd come near he'd pretend he had urgent business on the other side of the tank.
The thing I liked most about him was that his name was very similar to 'Barry', a California fish acquaintance of mine named after a Resident Evil character. I liked to wander back by his office and murmur "Larry. Where's... Larry?"
Of late, I had taken on a share of the responsibility for feeding him, and if he was hungry enough then he wouldn't hide behind the plastic grass when I opened the lid to 'flake him'. I felt we'd grown closer, formed a bond.
Although he was advanced in years, possibly the second oldest member of the staff, the end came swiftly. I like to think he was out this weekend hitting some den of ill repute and either took a chill or ODed. But this morning he was found at the top of the tank, peacefully riding the bubbles from the aerator. Vaya con Dios, Larry.
