Is there a preferred or suggested method for cleaning a mattress and a pillow that have been peed on? The pillow is not down, so maybe I can just toss it in the washer and try to dry it. The mattress will be more difficult. It's a pillow top, too.
(Kirby: at least I wasn't in the bed this time.)

Pillow, washer with a few towels, dryer. Expect the washer to pha-lump a lot.

Mattress... hmmm. harder, unless you have a really really big washer...

According to various websites:

Use borax (brand name Boraxo or 20 Mule Team) to get the urine smell/stains out. You wet the spot, then rub in a little dry borax powder and let it dry. (A hair dryer speeds things along.) Then you just brush or shake out the borax. Works like a charm. V

I didn't use this on a mattress, but in my car, and I was getting out vomit, not pee, but I still think that you may want to try Mother's Little Miracle (I believe that's the name). I got a bottle at Rockridge Kids, and it did wonders for my stinky problem, and it's advertised to be able to handle just about everything a kid can dish out. I also used Febreeze in the car for the same problem, and it also worked pretty well. You can pick up both of these things for under $10, and give it a whirl. Of course, if it doesn't work these items are useful for other things. Oh, and you probably want to get a plastic sheet for the bed!

This is hard. You have to try to remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting the stain or using a upholstery attachment and a carpet cleaning machine and wet cleaning it. Or even wetting it down and using a wet vacuum remove as much of the stain as possible.

Try these techniques :

If the stain is fresh you can use the dish soap and water mixture described in most of our carpet spot cleaning tips as a spotting agent or you can buy an enzyme based cleaner, mix 50:50 with warm water, and pour over the stain, let set and rinse out with water.

Blot as much of the moisture as possible or vacuum up as much of the moisture as possible.

It can be very difficult to remove this kind of stain since if too much moisture or stain has made it to the inside it is hard to effectively clean it.

You can also dry out the mattress in the sun. Since the sun has disinfecting qualities you will know you when have completely dried the stain - by the odor.

Moisture will cause all kinds of problems with this stain if it is allowed to ferment, etc. Best of luck.…. here is a good argument to make everything out of plastic!

I think that stuff is called Nature's Miracle. I used to live with two cats whose chief joy in life was to piss on my chair. But it didn't soak in per se -- more of a pooling action. Worked pretty well for me, though.
